Are mushrooms the magical ingredient for a slimmer physique?
Stars like Katy Perry and Kelly Osbourne reportedly turn to this veggie
when they’re looking to drop a few extra pounds. To follow the M-Plan,
dieters simply replace one meal a day with a meal based around raw
mushrooms over a 14-day period. Lest you think all mushrooms have been sprinkled with waistline-friendly fairy dust, the big secret to this regimen actually has nothing to do with mushrooms. Swapping a high-calorie meal for a nutrient-dense veggie-based option will help you cut calories while keeping you full at the same time.
New York City-based registered dietitian Jaclyn London explains that stars likely tap mushrooms as their go-to veggie because a mere 1-cup portion contains 1 gram of satiating fiber for just 20 calories. “While it doesn’t seem super-high in fiber, a meal comprised of mostly mushrooms will be lower in calories, but is likely packing in at least 2.5 grams of fiber, which is 10 percent of the daily value you need,” London says. And the benefits don’t stop there: Mushrooms have a meaty texture, so they can almost pass for animal protein in a dish. They also provide key nutrients like selenium and potassium, which improve immune function and lower blood pressure.
Before you get too amped about the M-Plan, however, London cautions against relying too heavily on mushrooms. By piling them up, you may miss out on the important benefits of whole grains and protein sources in your diet. London suggests loading up half your plate with mushrooms instead, as this tactic will easily up your intake of fiber and nutrients to keep you fuller longer, helping you lose weight. The other half of your plate should be a quarter whole grains—like quinoa, brown rice, farro or bulgur—and a quarter lean protein—like fish, skinless poultry, tofu, pork chop, eggs or egg whites—to make sure “all meals are balanced and satisfying,” London says.
If you want to lose a little more weight without stressing about it, the underlying concept behind Katy Perry’s mushroom-centered diet does hold true. “The M-Plan highlights a key idea about nutrition that is important to call out,” London says. “If you’re going to swap out any ingredient and replace it with something else, you are 99.9 percent always better off swapping out a higher-calorie option for healthful, high-fiber, high-water containing veggie.”
